We advise our patients to ensure they follow a healthy and effective home care routine. This includes brushing twice per day for 2 minutes each time, and flossing once per day. These simple steps will improve and maintain your oral health and smile.
Some patients prefer using interdental brushes than flossing, as some patients find this more effective and easier. It’s also recommended to use a mouth wash once or twice per day, ideally a zero alcohol product.
We provide a range of free samples at our practice including tooth paste and mouth wash products. You are welcome to take samples home to try for yourself and your family.
In terms of choice of manual or powered toothbrush, it is a personal choice. Powered toothbrushes are more effective and efficient when used correctly, but will be more expensive and require charing and changing of brush heads at regular intervals. However powered toothbrushes can also result in gum sensitivity as they are so powerful compared to manual tooth brushes. This can lead to receding gums so the angle and force applied must be considered in order to avoid causing other problems.
If using a manual toothbrush, these will also need to be changed regularly and effective use needs to be followed. We will demonstrate correct usage at your check up appointments.
To further boost your dental health, we also recommend jet interdental cleaners, these can be used with water or mouthwash and are effective if patients do not like flossing or interdental brushes. These also need charging, and patients report they are very effective, especially when used with mouth wash.
It is also recommended that you consider your food and drink choices, as some are very acidic or have high sugar content. All of these factors lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Making better choices will also improve your overall health, energy and waistline.
If you have children, you should also lead by example and ensure your children follow an effective dental care routine. You and your family should also attend annual or 6 monthly check up appointments as advised.
Our dental team believe that preventive dentistry is the best approach to improving and maintaining your oral health and smile.
